Featured Fan Fiction: Sowing the SeeDs (Final Fantasy 8)

Our next story is called “Sowing the SeeDs” by Greenbeans, A.K.A. Amanda Anderson. If you’re not familiar with the Final Fantasy 8 universe, yes, that last D is supposed to capitalized. But no, it’s not an acronym or anything. I don’t know how to explain it, it’s this whole thing. Sowing the SeeDs is a prequel to FF8 and is the story of Xu. She’s not an original character, but she might as well be because this story gives her a ton of backstory. Xu is about to graduated from Garden (a school for mercenaries) and has been charged with taking care of a young prodigy named Quistis. As they…

Featured Fan Fiction: The Coming of Winter (Mortal Kombat)

The first on our list is “The Coming of Winter” by Victar. I don’t even know the dude’s real name (assuming he is a dude), but he is, and so far still is, my favorite fan fiction author. He wrote my all time favorite, “Ashes of the Phoenix” which you’ll hear more about soon. I encountered Victar’s work during my Mortal Kombat phase, and was just getting into the World Wide Web. This was when web WebCrawler, AltaVista, and Yahoo were the top searching sites, and Google was just a gleam in someone’s eye. I found MK fan sites, and with them, MK fan fiction. There wasn’t much, so it…

    Featured Fan Fiction: The Intro

And now it’s time to premiere a new feature here at the AuthorQuest blog: Featured Fan Fiction of Flippin’ Whenever. This is where I take my little corner of the web to feature some of the unsung writers that have influenced me. You won’t find any book deals or agent contracts in these guys’ closets. Oh no. They do it for the love. For the fame. For no reward other than the sheer joy of the act. And reviews. My history with fan fiction started with Star Trek and America OnLine (also known as AOL). I was really into Star Trek: The Next Generation and I was really into reading.…

  • Writing Is Getting Less Fun

These days, the writing is getting less fun. Lots of struggle for no reward. I haven’t sold a story since Influx Capacitor, which was in March. Black Hole Son has been sent to 30 agents, and only one garnered a positive response. Granted, I said before how Black Hole Son would never be published so this isn’t totally unexpected. But still, it’s disheartening. It’s not certain why things aren’t selling, and earlier they were. Maybe it’s economy. Maybe it’s summer–for some reason everything slows down in the summer. Maybe too many people take vacations. Maybe everyone just sucks (sorry, that’s the cold talking, most people don’t suck, but for those…

New Fan Fiction: Milk & Honey (Legend of Zelda)

Remember when I said it was a long six weeks after my wife gave birth via C-section? Well, this is the result: “Milk and Honey”, a Legend of Zelda fan fiction and my first attempt at erotica. What’s it about? Link has been having a sexual relationship with Zelda for a long time, but it has to be secret, because he’s a commoner, and Princess Zelda cannot have a relationship with a commoner. So he’s frustrated and bored. Until he helps a rain-soaked Malon at Lon Lon Ranch, and arousal develops. So kiddies take note. This is an adult story with lots of adult graphic sex and description. If reading…

  • It Wasn’t Me

Well, I’ve done something I said I would never do again. I was bored, and really, idle hands are the devil’s playthings. It’s not my fault, it’s that I was waiting on everyone. I needed something to do. I was afraid I was going to lose my skill. I didn’t want to get fat and lazy. I started a fan fiction. I’m not proud of it, but I finished Alien Boxing Story, and it needs to incubate. Now all my stories are waiting on critiques, being submitted, or (in the case of Mermaid Story) are waiting for extenuating circumstances (i.e., waiting for Black Hole Son to be complete). So where…

Video Game Memories #20: Final Fantasy VII

Final Fantasy VII (1997) Some of the greatest things in my life came from things I didn’t like at first. Then as time went by I started to appreciate them more and more, like a wine that gets better with age. Except this is a wine that never runs dry. Also, I’m not really a connoisseur – I drink my wine like pop. Anyway, one of those things was Final Fantasy 7. It’s probably a good thing I got into it, or I’d be left out of a hundred inside jokes on the Internet. Plus some great fan art and fan fiction. Final Fantasy 7 has been taken into a…

  • Blood 2: The Unforgiven – Finished

Pages: 210 (at 12 pt. font)Words: 116,223 As of September 9, 6:56 PM CDT, I declare Blood 2: The Unforgiven, complete and done with. Now I’ve just gotta figure out when I’m going to release it. I’ve already got some files uploaded to FF.net, and according to their reader statistics, I get a lot of hits in the middle of the week – Wed, Thurs, etc. Lord knows why – maybe that’s when the boredom of teenagers sets in and they start wandering around the Internet, looking for something to do. Well, I’m hoping this is the last entry I do for Blood 2, unless it’s to talk about the…

  • One of those Days

Today’s a day where I just don’t feel like writing. Either I feel satisfied from yesterday, or I’m just too tired, or at least tired in the way, where the brain isn’t firing cleanly. Which is too bad because I’m only three or four chapters from the end of part one (which is basically a novel in itself, I should reward myself just for that). I think this one of those times where I need to bitch-slap myself and say “Get back to work, ho”. I did get a nice ego boost today when I logged into my fanfiction.net account for the first time in months, just to see where…

  • Talkin’ Baseball

Yesterday was the Twins home opener, which, if I wasn’t married, I wouldn’t have glanced twice at. However, like pets that resemble their owners, interests tend to bleed over when you find a girl to twirl with. Yes, somehow I became interested in the Twins. But it’s okay, she’s become interested in things like video games and Magic:The Gathering (which we played while watching the game), so it’s all right. My point is, I had an idea for a baseball-oriented Final Fantasy 7 fan fic last year, it’s been tooling around in my head for a while, and I really think it would be fun to write it. The thing…
