    Why Did John Carter Fail?

I watched John Carter for the first time (on Disney+) and had some thoughts. Film buffs like to talk about John Carter. The movie was supposed to be a big new franchise for Disney, but it became a famous bomb. I don’t think it was poor marketing. Good word of mouth can outdo mediocre advertising and reach. That’s what happened with War Horse and The Greatest Showman and The Blind Side and the new Jumanji and especially Iron Man — no one expected much out of superhero movies after the Incredible Hulk and Fantastic Four duds. I don’t think it was a lack of star power. I don’t go to…

    I Hate Dream Sequences

I am a writer and I hate dream sequences. More than any other convention or cliche, dream sequences are the stupidest thing ever cooked up by the author’s imagination. I avoid them wherever I can. I avoid them like a river of lava. And if the time comes when I absolutely have to set foot in it, when I’ve exhausted all other options for alternate routes, backtracking, and even digging under the earth, I still don’t do it. Nothing wastes more of the readers time than going into a dream. I wish more creative writing teachers and guru told students to avoid this disease of books. Here’s why: 1) Dream…

NerdCon: Stories (Minneapolis Oct 9-10 2015)

So here’s my write-up on attending NerdCon: Stories. To summarize, I’m not sure how much I learned, but I was definitely entertained. There wasn’t anything about the publishing industry or how to get an agent, but that was all right. That wasn’t what I was expecting. This con was focused on the fundamentals behind the story: why they matter, what effect they can have. The medium didn’t matter. Novel, movie, or song. Horror, erotica, or adventure. Stories are what makes us human. Let’s go to the rundown. Unlike Convergence, there was a lot more “everybody goes to this” events scheduled. The only thing scheduled in the morning was mainstage entertainment.…

Why Do They Keep Letting M. Night Shyamalan Make Movies?

I really can’t believe they keep letting M. Night Shyamalan make movies. The guy can’t still be making studios money, right? His reputation is junk. The last five movies he’s made have been junk. Average Tomatometer: 42%. Average Metascore: 44. Is there a popularity in foreign markets that I’m not aware of? It’s sad because he started so well, with a decent movie. It mostly got notoriety because of the twist ending. But I liked Unbreakable too. Signs was well-made, but full of glaring plot holes. He makes fine movies, as long as you turn off your brain during them. Holy crap, The Last Airbender was the worst movie of…
