• Year In Review

Well, since it’s fun to look back, let’s examine the year in review. At the beginning of the year, I only had Avatar (now Playable Character) in my short story harem. Now I’ve got seven more making the rounds. Speaking of Playable Character, it was also the year of my first sale to The Dunesteef. Although I’m still waiting on publication and payment. Hopefully, it’ll be soon and I can start saying “published” instead of “accepted for publication”. The big thing was that I finished Black Hole Son and started sending it out to agents. That meant I had to make my first query letter, and boy howdy did I…

  • Still More Whining About Short Stories

Writing is a depressing business. I’m not talking about the constant rejections. I’m not even at that level yet. I’m talking about when you know your own work is crap compared to everything out there. Before yesterday everything was going fine and dandy. La-dee-da, I’m getting good story ideas. No writer’s block for a while, which is difficult when I’m doing first draft composition. Then I did a word check to see how much I’m getting written per day. Only a thousand words. When I was writing Blood 2 and Black Hole Son, I could get 2,000 a day easy, and then some if I had time, and that filled…

  • Some Days You Don’t Feel Like Writing

Some days you just don’t feel like writing. You’re back at work, knowing you’ll be moving to another department in a few days, one which may not be as merciful. Your body aches because of the changing weather. The baby is cranky all the time, and needs constant attention or she’ll start crying. The stock market is crashing down around your ears, and you’re worried society is heading for The Grapes of Wrath, and there’s nothing you can do about it. So what’s the point of writing some crappy kaiju story that won’t net you more than pizza money? But you know you gotta write, because that’s what you do.…

  • The Blood 2 Wordle

For those who care, here is the Blood 2 Wordle. When I did this for the previous draft, the word “just” was just as big as Avery (I like the positioning of that word). I’ve got no compunctions about like being the size it is, since a lot of the people talk like teenagers, but I might eliminate more than usual in my next stories.

  • Pride In Your Work

Let’s talk about pride in your work for a second. Recently on the Adam Carolla show, they were talking about how so many people are doing mediocre jobs, or sometimes no job at all. There was a nurse who called in, saying she had lost friends because she had to discipline her underlings, because they weren’t doing the work they were being paid for. A patient would press on the call button and the nurses would go for coffee. She said there are so many who are just waiting for the end of their 12-hour shift so they can get a paycheck. Adam, whose penchant for asking the obvious and…

  • Nothing to Report

Nothing to report, but I figured I need to make a blog entry. My Gmail Drive Shell Extension went kaput on Friday. This sent me to a momentary panic, but all my files are accounted for and safe. I don’t think it’s me, I think google did something to render the drive extension unusable. I couldn’t find anything about anyone else having a problem though. So I’m wondering what I should do in the meantime. I guess it’s back to schlepping files back and forth via email to myself. Pain in the ass, but it’s the only way to maintain file persistence and still be able to access stuff via…

  • Thought for the Day

Thought for the Day: If you are in China, and you eat a hamburger, and the hamburger came from a cow in China, the bread was made in China, and the ketchup reads something in cryptic symbols, are you eating Chinese food?

  • 2000 words a day! Plus tax

I’m doing pretty good maintaining 2,000 words a day, and I want to keep that streak. Especially since I’m not halfway through the novel, and I’m already getting bored with it, and getting ideas for the next one. No, no, for shame. So that’s why I haven’t been writing here much. But to keep you amused here are some interesting links you might find interesting (also, redundancy is repetitive). Live Journal Pix – Shows the last 50 images posted to live journal. A roulette of kitties, buildings, and things in Russian. I Can Haz Cheezburger – LOL Kitties daily. Cover Browser – Every single comic book cover ever made! Seriously!…

  • An Allegory for Sex Education

Well, a good chunk of my page views are coming from my editorial on Shadow of the Colossus. So, in a shameless effort to stir up the controversy stew, let me show off an allegory (one of my favorite literary devices) on sex education, in case you’re bored with my whining about writing five hundred words. This post may contain naughty things. You want to know why we should teach sex education? You need look no further than file-sharing. File sharing/pirate downloading is technically illegal. There’s no two ways about it. (Proponents of file-sharing don’t want to legalize it, but they don’t want ridiculous and broken techniques like DRM and…

  • Zzzzzz

So tired. Don’t want to write. No, must write. Must write difficult chase scene that isn’t coalescing in my mind’s eye. No, no writey. Need sleepy. Have to write. Story won’t write itself. Words must come. No, no words come. Need sleepy.
