This Friday, Hank Green announced NerdCon: Stories, a convention for storytellers of many mediums, would be coming to Minneapolis in October. This Saturday, I registered for it. I’ve been feeling that now is the time to go to a new convention. We all know Convergence didn’t work out, but I think that’s because it was an all-encompassing sci-fi crowd. Diverse interests with subject matter plus an established history means its something that needs to be enjoyed with friends. And young people have friends — friends who aren’t married or have kids, friends who can drop life for a weekend, friends with plenty of disposable income (and time). I’d been thinking…

CONvergence: The Write-Up, Part 3
A typical panel room GUESTS I already mentioned Brian Keene, who was drinking in front of everyone and had this great just-don’t-give-a-fuck attitude. Don’t know anything that he’s done (I think he’s in comic books), but he’s awesome. I didn’t see much of him though, even though he was the first billed guest of honor. Likewise was Joseph Scrimshaw. I’m not sure what he does, but he was pretty damn funny too. If not for the Vilification Tennis fiasco, I would have had no compunctions about seeing him. Here’s my sister at the North Star Roller Girl event PANELS I wanted to go to CONvergence 101, but that started too early for me. The earliest I could get there was 5:00 PM, so the first panel I went to was “How to Make a Living as a Creative Person”. It was one of the most useful. I learned a lot about resources available to me, and how some people earn money. I even learned about a site where freelancers can go and bid on jobs. Not sure where it is, but I got to find it. CONvergence: The Write-Up, Part 1
CONvergence is a “spec fic” convention, held in Minnesota in early July. This year, I attended my first. It’s not the first convention I attended. When I went to school in Eau Claire was the first NoBrandCon, put on by the campus’s Anime Appreciation Society. I was a helper in year two and an attendee in year three. The guys who put it on are great, and I had a great time. If not for NoBrandCon, I would have no idea how conventions work, and probably wouldn’t have gone.
