One of the biggest problems my wife, a middle school teacher at a private Catholic school, faces these days is kids who simply don’t care. You might think this is less of an issue at a non-public school, but in those cases, the parents are the ones who care enough to pay extra for their child’s education. The child’s motivation, however, is a separate subject. And this isn’t a matter of “school sucks, I’m going to be a singer/entrepreneur/flight attendant/dental hygienist”. This is “these kids are failing every class and will not be allowed to graduate high school.” (At least, they shouldn’t be allowed to graduate. I never knew anyone…

Why I Decided to Send My Kids Back to School
Yeah, it’s a controversial opinion and one you wouldn’t expect me to make. I wouldn’t expect me to make it. I am very firmly on the side of “take this virus seriously” because it’s not a flu. You could get brain damage, lung damage, kidney damage, etc. But I also know my kids. I know what they need I know what’s best for them and their lives and me & my wife know they are better off going to school and risking the virus. Since I’m sure you’re all fascinated by my decision-making process, I’m going to outline my reasons here. Distance Learning Sucks Donkey Balls So last year, school…

The Books I Read: September – October 2017
This is Where It Ends by Marieke Nijkamp In a word, melodramatic. In many other words… The tone of this story skews so heavily feminine it’s distracting. I’m not saying femininity is a bad thing, but an event like this is going to have a lot of different reactions from different people. It’s supposed to be about a real school shooting, but it’s so cheesy it doesn’t feel real. The narrative is split into the perspectives of four victims in four different situations. One is the ex-girlfriend of the shooter, another is the sister of the shooter, another is that sister’s lesbian girlfriend, and last is the trouble-making brother of…

Guest Authors at my Kids’ School
So at my kids’ elementary school, they have authors come in for talks. Seems like this happens about once a year. It’s great for the kids because they get to meet the people behind the books. And I’d be boosting this even if I wasn’t an author. It’s important to learn that products don’t come out of thin air — it takes hard work, research, patience, and teamwork. It’s like going to a farm to understand where their food comes from — it doesn’t just appear in the grocery store. That we eat other living things and that’s okay — that’s the food chain. It’s good for the authors too…

Little Red Riding Hines and the Big Bad Wolf
I don’t know why I keep getting in kerfuffles with Jim C. Hines. I think that if we ever met in person, we’d get along great. It’s just we have some convictions we disagree on, or I’m woefully ignorant of. It’s not like I’m coming away obstinate and unchanged. I now understand that inability to give consent for sex = consent not given. You’d think that’d be a no-brainer, but yes, it did need to stew in my brain a little while before I understood it completely. White male privilege is an insidious thing. I resolved it by using the metaphor of stage-diving. You want to jump off the stage…
