    The NFL’s Stupid-Ass Anthem Policy

I would love nothing more than to see every Viking on opening day, sitting in the locker room, waiting for the anthem to finish. You can’t regulate patriotism. Baseball games used to just have the seventh inning stretch. Peanuts and cracker-jacks and that’s it. Now they also play America the Beautiful while a B-roll of nationalistic images from Sam the Eagle’s archives plays on the jumbotron. Happened after 9/11, wouldn’t ya know. And people look at you funny if you don’t stand for that. When you force people to stand and pay homage/obesiance to a symbol, that’s no longer a democracy. Democracy means you have a choice. Taking away people’s…

Monday Night Football Special: Players vs. Women & Children

I play Fantasy Football.  That means I watch the football culture.  I would like to get my daughters into football or fantasy football because it would be a fun bonding experience.  However, I’m having trouble justifying that when the front page of ESPN is filled with who’s going to prison, who failed a drug test, and who’s getting suspended.  How can I allow my daughters to watch the NFL when it is so cruel to women and children (of which they are both). Especially given the latest news on Minnesota’s greatest American hero – Adrian Peterson.  My eldest has a Peterson jersey (it’s adorable), but still hasn’t grasped that he’s…

My Fantasy Football Team This Year

So I had my Fantasy Football draft last night. Here’s the 2011-2012 edition of Juneau’s Juggernauts. Philip Rivers (QB) – San Diego Chargers -A modest leader. He is taking the role of the quarterback after the former was shot during a failed revolution. Although unfamiliar with the position, Rivers must attempt to be a strong presence in a chaotic land. But will he be able to succeed when he finds out that one of his futrue opponents is his own father? Miles Austin (WR) – Dallas Cowboys -Miles Austin is the pseudonym of a yorbagatrax — an alien trying to learn human ways. He learned that the biggest difference between…

  • My Fantasy Football Team

This is my Fantasy Football Team. Click to Enlarge It sucks. I mean seriously. I’ve got a good team here. Eli Manning is my QB. Ray Rice is my primary running back and Andre Johnson is my good wide receiver. But tight end scored almost as many points as them combined. I got the second lowest score out of my ten-team league. The person who has five people from the Vikings on their team did better than me. Is it me, or is it my players? Did I not pick good people? My two best receivers, the two most important positions in the team, totally flunked with piss-poor performances. My Saints…

  • Final Fantasy Football

I recently joined a Fantasy Football League for the first time. I enjoy football, and our CS semester-long project was to create a fantasy football program (which I kept calling Final Fantasy Football). What appeals to me is that it seems like an RPG. You form your party, they all have their individual characteristics and strengths, and you have to create a balanced team that’s the strongest you can get. And everything is based on a points system. The hard part is that the party is so big, and I’ve got so many characters to choose from, many of which I know nothing about. Even from my own home team…
