So before I started my new job, I watched American Factory on Netflix, just to get myself in the mindset for the working world (i.e. becoming a corporate drone again, as opposed to a stay-at-home slob*). It was more objective than most documentaries I see. (I kinda got soured on them because I’ve seen so many that have a point they want to reach, then manipulate what you see to prove that point.) Analyzing the Disney Villains: Shan Yu (Mulan)
SHAN YU Origin: Mulan (1998) Shan Yu’s a pretty bad guy. Looking at the overall picture of Disney villains, I’d say he comes out in the top 25 percentile. He has a good look, good evilness, but thin ties to the characters. Motivation: Shan Yu is a conqueror, which was the style at the time. And I suppose it presents its own motivation. No one really questions why Hannibal or Alexander the Great or Julius Caesar did what they did. It was an empire thing.
