rapunzel tower

A Little Writing Prompt Exercise to Kill Time This Friday

“Begin a new story at a far psychic distance and, within 200 words, gracefully decrease the psychic distance until you are in first person.”

“Your main character is Rapunzel when the prince comes along. Or your main character is the prince when he meets Rapunzel. They begin to talk. She starts falling in love with him, and he starts falling in love with her. From the point of view of either of them, write about falling in love.”

The speck she thought at first was a fly was actually in the distance, she realized. It was moving too slowly to be a fly. Among the bushy trees, like stalks of broccoli in a giant’s garden.

The speck was, in fact, a horse. Not just a horse, but a rider too. Sometimes he would disappear into a copse, but he always came out the other side. He wore red (assuming it was a man, but that was a fair bet), the color of noblemen. So the witch told her.

Rapunzel fiddled with her hair nervously. The horse was not stopping. Not deviating. If he didn’t turn soon, he would find the tower. And no one was supposed to find the tower. What would happen if he did?

She ducked back under the windowsill, heart pounding. Was he going to kill her? How was he intending to get up the tower? Was there some way that she didn’t know about? Her mind became a jumbled soup of questions.

“Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your hair.”

He knew? Was he the enchantress in disguise? How was I supposed to know? If there was magic to make hair eighty feet long, why not such that could to turn a woman to a man.
